概要
* Students wishing to retake this course are required to email the instructor before the first class. In this class, you will learn how to write an effective argument-based research paper in English. In the fall semester, we will first focus on avoiding logical fallacies in your writing, a skill that builds on the spring semester’s focus. We will then learn how to conduct and report simple primary research. This will include conducting a simple survey on your selected topic with both a quantitative and qualitative component. We will write two graded essays this semester: one in working groups using a limited selection of collected scholarly sources, the other by researching a selected topic on your own. The syllabus below is tentative and subject to change based on the abilities and needs of the students.
目標
Demonstrate proficiency in the outcomes outlined in the first year. Produce an argument-based academic paper of 1,500+ words that contributes a meaningful position to the research topic. Choose an appropriate research topic by narrowing or expanding the scope of the research and identifying appropriate research questions. Support a thesis statement that articulates a meaningful position in their research topic. Evaluate sources for the quality of information and evidence they offer. Synthesize multiple points of view from a wide variety of credible resources, including library databases, print and online services. Interpret information—statements, visuals, graphs, statistics, etc.—and draw reasonable conclusions by avoiding logical fallacies. Position their ideas in relation to multiple sources through summary, paraphrase, and quotation. Understand and avoid plagiarism by distinguishing their ideas from the ideas of others according to a discipline-appropriate documentation style (in this case, APA). Produce clear, grammatical sentences. Demonstrate an ability to write a variety of complex sentence structures (simple, compound, complex).
授業外の学習
