概要

The whole semester will be devoted to debates, including three group debates on education, social issues and international issues. All students will have three opportunities to participate in front-of-the-class debates. Students are expected to write a 500-word report after each of the three debates. They are also expected to submit a 500-word self-evaluation reaction paper in the end of the semester. One-page reaction paper on TED talk presentations will also be assigned. Less than 85% attendance will result in failure regardless of the reason of the absence. The final goal of the course is to develop critical thinking skills among all students. We will use Moodle as main platform to provide class materials and some recordings if necessary. ** Students wishing to retake this course are required to email the instructor before the first class.

目標

The objective of this course is to improve and develop students' English proficiency in the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. The ultimate goal is to develop students' critical thinking skills.

授業外の学習

Students are required to study approximately two hours every week outside class to prepare and review classes. Students need to review the maxims of successful debates, do research and collect material at the e-library and other resources to support their arguments (70 minutes), organize them and practice different roles of debate at home before and after classes (50 minutes). To develop debating skills, the debates will be recorded and the link of the recording will be posted on the Moodle so that each student will be able to review his/her performance and set his/her own points for improvement. Summer readings on each student's field of study will be assigned.

所要時間: more than 45 minutes per class
