You will be making things and writing about what you have made every week. These weekly tasks will form your final PORTFOLIO. This portfolio will be very important for your final grade and will include oral presentations in class.

概要

In the first term we will explore CREATIVITY and COMMUNICATION. In the second term we will explore CRITICAL THINKING and MEDIA. The first term relies very heavily on students' creative input into the class and the second term will be organised around themes and problems that have emerged during the first term. For that reason the syllabus below is more creative than literal. * Students wishing to retake this course are required to email the instructor before the first class.

目標

To encourage students to actively explore different ways of communicating, collaborating and problem solving through creative tasks. To think about ways in which we can contribute to improving our battered planet, not only for ourselves, but for the myriad other beautiful, non-human minds around us.

授業外の学習

I expect you to use your senses. (But forget common sense) I expect you to listen to music, to absorb art, to eat well and to listen. Also, spend time with older people and animals, including insects and fish. Lie on your back sometimes. Watch movies. Eat jazz for breakfast. Read BOOKS - real books.

スケジュール

  1. Introduction of the class and methodology (The class shifts with the students' input so the below is less a contract and more like a useless map which could be thrown away later.)
  2. Students begin their projects
  3. Students sing and dance and play the bongos
  4. Students make cheese on toast
  5. Students examine their own and other students' navels
  6. Students are tired. They take a break
  7. Students upset the apple cart
  8. They spend a long time putting the apples back in the cart.
  9. We make cider with the crushed apples and get merry.
  10. We wassail a bit to keep the apples happy
  11. After this we are ready to begin the real work of
  12. Cleaning up the mess we've made of this beautiful planet
  13. Students get riled up real bad about some real world issues
  14. They decide to kick the teacher out of the room
  15. And take responsibility for their own education and the world.
  16. Teacher persuades the students to let them (gender neutral) back into the classroom
  17. With new humility the teacher begins to learn from the students.
  18. Eventually they (the students) permit them (the teacher) to begin a dialogue that involves real learning.
  19. A field trip is organised to explore the ant colony
  20. After the trip to the ant colony the professor feels refreshed
  21. He or she or both order the students to leave the room
  22. They refuse because they are having so much fun using their minds that they want to go on playing past midnight.
  23. Someone suggests this may annoy the authorities
  24. Someone else suggests that this may not be such a bad thing
  25. The authorities are called in, but they slip on the apple juice and knock themselves unconscious
  26. Without the authorities real learning begins to take place
  27. Thoughts and new ideas sprout from the students brains like out of control fungi
  28. And when they explode, the spores will change everything.
