概要
This course focuses on further developing the skills required to plan and write a 1,500–2,000-word research essay with a coherent and well-supported argument. Building on the work completed in Composition A-1, the areas covered will again initially include selecting and refining an essay topic, identifying and critically evaluating relevant sources (as well as reviewing appropriate citation procedures), and drafting an outline based on a working thesis statement. Additional planning components (compared to A-1) in the first part of the course will include developing a preliminary research proposal as the basis of the outline, examining and engaging with counterarguments relevant to your position, and considering how to both support your own argument and challenge or refute opposing viewpoints. Subsequent classes will explore effective strategies that can be used during the essay drafting and revision process, with careful attention to explaining how to work from an outline and integrate sources while developing an argument for a longer research essay. Throughout the course, there will be an emphasis on learning how to articulate your own ideas clearly and confidently in written form. * Students wishing to retake this course are required to email the instructor before the first class.
