概要
This course will examine the fundamentals of academic writing in English. We will look at the basics of constructing paragraphs, thesis sentences, and the process of academic writing. Writing assignments will include several genres including: narrative essays, comparison-contrast essays, process essays, and argumentative essays.
目標
1. Produce an essay of 1,000+ words with the following elements: Introduction • Articulate a thesis statement that responds to assignment requirements • Provide relevant background information necessary to understand the thesis statement Supporting Paragraphs • Support the thesis statement, using a variety of persuasive strategies • Write coherent paragraphs with a topic sentence and supporting details Conclusion • Restate the thesis statement, bringing greater clarity to the argument 2. Demonstrate awareness of the department’s Academic Honesty Policy and avoid plagiarism by distinguishing their ideas from the ideas of others 3. Incorporate information from credible sources according to a discipline-appropriate documentation style (e.g. APA, MLA, etc.) 4. Position their ideas with the ideas of another source through summary, paraphrase, and quotation 5. Lay out a logical framework for their essay 6. Make language choices appropriate to academic writing 7. Produce clear, grammatical sentences 8. Demonstrate awareness of writing strengths and weaknesses and their own writing process.
