概要
This course introduces students to the cultures and societies of the English-speaking world from a historical and geopolitical perspective. The first part of the course will focus on the globalization of English in relation to the history of British colonialism and the development of postcolonial nations (including the United States, India, Nigeria, and South Africa). The second part of the course focuses on American culture and values, particularly contemporary issues related to political conflict, class, gender, and race in the United States. The key themes in each module will be examined using a wide range of materials, including newspaper and magazine articles, academic essays and opinion pieces, film and television clips, and different types of fictional and historical texts. An active learning approach will be employed (combined with short introductory lectures), with an emphasis on classroom activities such as group discussion and debate, collaborative worksheets, and both critical and creative writing exercises. * Students wishing to retake this course are required to email the instructor before the first class.
