概要
This course will give you the opportunity to improve your knowledge of the culture, history, and current political issues of the United States. It will also help you develop your English and academic skills. Topics will include: the US constitution and founding ideals, "manifest destiny" and the American West, immigration history, race in modern America, LGBTQ rights, the US economy, and indigenous peoples. We will also make case studies of particular regions of the US, including (provisionally) California and New York. Texts will include newspaper articles, NGO reports, short essays, fiction, and films (including, provisionally, ""Barbie", "Nomadland", and "Lady Bird"). The class will place emphasis on active learning. Classroom activities will include worksheets, quizzes, debates, and group-work activities. You will use the same Slack accounts you used for Cultures A-1 last semester. * Students wishing to retake this course are required to email the instructor before the first class.
