概要

This course seeks to develop your critical thinking skills, group discussion and debating abilities, and analytical and argumentative capacities, with a focus on contexts and applications related to critical media literacy and comparative cultural studies. In particular, you will be provided with opportunities to practice and improve the four key skills of reading, writing, listening, and speaking in English through active engagement with topics related to gender, history, politics, and inequality (often from a comparative and/or intercultural perspective). Classes will involve the examination and analysis of a range of different media and materials, with close attention to developing a deeper understanding of the concepts of representation, perspective, and intersectionality in relation to a wide range of contemporary topics and issues. The class will employ a range of active learning methods, including group work focused on analytical tasks, classroom debates on assigned readings, presentations, and reaction papers. Throughout the course, you will be encouraged to adopt a critical outlook and a thoughtful, self-reflective attitude towards the material covered, as well as towards your own and your classmates' views. * Students wishing to retake this course are required to email the instructor before the first class.

目標

1. To continue further developing your critical thinking and argumentation skills (by building on the approaches and activities covered in English Skills A-1). 2. To practice and improve your collaborative abilities in different group work tasks (with an emphasis on applying these skills in class discussions and debates). 3. To enhance your capacity for critical engagement with a wide range of media and materials concerning gender, history, and inequality, in addition to academic essays and opinion pieces on related topics. 4. To develop your presentation and research skills further through encouraging the independent exploration of social and political issues relevant to the course.
