概要

This course seeks to develop your critical thinking skills, group discussion and debating abilities, and analytical and argumentative capacities, with a focus on contexts and applications related to academic discussion and debate, critical media literacy, and generative AI. In particular, you will be provided with opportunities to practice and improve the four key skills of reading, writing, listening, and speaking in English through active engagement with multiple topics in this field, drawing on contemporary research and perspectives (both academic and non-specialist). Classes will involve the examination and analysis of a range of different media and materials, often drawing on recent events in American, British, and Japanese current affairs, in addition to other relevant global developments. The class will employ a range of active learning methods, including group work focused on analytical tasks, classroom debates on assigned readings (and/or student-selected open topics), presentations, and reaction papers. Throughout the course, you will be encouraged to adopt a critical outlook and a thoughtful, self-reflective attitude towards the material covered, as well as towards your own and your classmates' views. * Students wishing to retake this course are required to email the instructor before the first class.

目標

1. To further develop your critical thinking and argumentation skills (with a focus on classroom discussion and debates). 2. To enhance your capacity for critical engagement with a wide range of media and materials concerning academic discussion (and research), critical media literacy, and generative AI, in addition to academic essays/articles, opinion pieces, and texts from other genres on related topics. 4. To develop your presentation and research skills further through encouraging the independent exploration of social and political issues relevant to the course.
