概要

This is the second in a series of four consecutive seminars on macroeconomics, financial markets and international finance. Throughout this series, students will analyze the functioning of financial markets and the banking system, their importance for the macroeconomy and the role of monetary policy, both from a theoretical and an empirical perspective. The detailed syllabus below is a suggestion and will be modified depending on student interests. In Seminar 2, students will become familiar with basic aspects of international financial markets and look in greater detail at monetary theory. In addition, building on their studies in Seminar 1, students will start specializing in a research area depending on their interests. Seminar participants are expected to attend lectures in "Intermediate Macroeconomics" and "International Finance" before or while taking this seminar series. All course materials will be distributed via the course page on Moodle. Parts of grading will also be handled via Moodle. Please make sure that you subscribe to the course page on Moodle in order to participate in this course. Course registration and Moodle are not interlinked; and therefore, registration on Moodle must be done separately.

目標

1) Understanding of the functioning of financial markets and the banking system as well as the associated problems, their importance for the macroeconomy and the role of monetary policy. 2) Ability to analyze economic problems from a theoretical perspective using economic models and an empirical perspective using data analysis methods. 3) Ability to read and analyze published research papers and develop and articulate own research ideas. Fostering of writing and presentation skills.

授業外の学習

A detailed reading list will be provided before the seminar or during the first class. Students will be assigned a set of questions on each reading to prepare in advance before class and will then take turn in presenting their results and guiding the discussion. In addition, each student will work on a research project building upon the proposal submitted at the end of Seminar 1. Regular reports on the progress of this project throughout the semester are required. Finally, at the end of the semester, each will suggest a proposal for specialized research in Seminar 3 during the following semester.

所要時間: It depends on your work efficiency.
