概要

In this course we study the role of the government in a market economy. We first discuss what a market economy can and cannot accomplish. Among the market failures we focus on “income inequality” in this course. First, we study the policies of income redistribution. Second, we study social security program, especially public pension program in a framework of overlapping generations model. Finally, by combining these two we consider social security reform.

目標

To evaluate the role of the market economy and the role of the government developing and applying a set of micro and macroeconomics tools.

授業外の学習

1. Students should be comfortable with basic tools of micro and macroeconomics. Well review the micro and macro economics, especially the parts that relate public economics and public policy. 2. Well review the lecture notes. Solving the problem set will help you to understand the lectures. Due date for submitting the problem set will be announced in class. Each of 1 and 2 above will require at least 1.5 hours work per week in average.
