概要

The objective of this course is to understand the basics of development economics. The course mainly focuses on recent empirical findings rather than theoretical arguments. Topics to be covered include poverty, education, health, agriculture, finance, labor, and firms, among others. The course consists of lectures and group discussions (GDs). After the three introductory lectures, the course will have three rounds of the following three-week cycle. In the first week, a lecture is given to provide background information. In the second and third weeks, a brief summary of the assigned reading material is provided, followed by GDs. In these two weeks, students should complete pre-class assignments (i.e., reading the assigned material and making preparatory notes, comprising about five questions). Each reading assignment is about 2,000 words.

目標

Students understand the basic concepts and methods of development economics. They will be able to think international development issues in society based on the basic concepts of development economics, logically analyze the issues, and explain their ideas to others in easy-to-understand terms.

授業外の学習

Students should complete pre-class assignments six times. GDs will be in small groups, consisting of about 5-6 students, and ONLY English can be used. Students are encouraged to read supplementary materials to better understand the concepts and methods taught in the lecture.
