概要
International Economics is essentially comprised of two sub-fields: International Trade and International Finance. We will cover both topics as well one or two lectures on multinational corporations (MNCs). We will first gain a deeper understanding of the benefits and costs of “globalization”, the gains from trade, and the causes and costs of trade protection. We will also study the theory of Free Trade Agreements (CP-TPP, RCEP. NAFTA, etc.). This study will primarily use Partial Equilibrium Analysis. We will also study trade wars, both past and present, and use elementary game theory to understand them. In the second half, we will first briefly look at the history of world trade liberalization and current issues in trade protectionism. After this, we will look at the short and long-run determinants of trade balances. Why do countries have deficit or surpluses and how do exchange rate movements and other factors (e.g. growth rates, savings rates, etc.) affect them? We will also study international movements in Capital (esp. Foreign Direct Investment and Multinational Corporations (MNCs.). If time remains, we may also discuss "MNCs and wages" and "MNCs and the environment."
