概要
This course provides students with a basic knowledge of macroeconomic relationships and a toolkit to analyze the effects of various macroeconomic policies. The focus of the course is on understanding and interpreting aggregate data in the light of traditional macroeconomic models using graphical analysis as well as simple algebra. We will cover a wide range of topics in macroeconomics including the drivers of business cycle fluctuations, short run stabilization policies and the determinants of inflation and unemployment in the medium run. All course materials will be distributed via the course page on Moodle. Assignments and additional readings will also be handled via Moodle. Please make sure that you subscribe to the course page on Moodle in order to participate in this course. Course registration and Moodle are not interlinked; and therefore, registration on Moodle must be done separately.
目標
(1) Solid understanding of macroeconomic concepts including the measurement of macroeconomic variables, the drivers of short-run business cycles and the determinants of inflation and unemployment. (2) Ability to work with traditional macroeconomic models including the IS-LM model and the Phillips curve. (3) At the end of this course, students should be able to independently apply these concepts and models to the analysis of current topics in macroeconomics, including fiscal and monetary policy decisions, labour market policies and structural supply-side policies.
授業外の学習
The course is to a large extent based on the textbook "Macroeconomics" by Olivier Blanchard. Students are expected to read all relevant chapters (Chapters 1-9) as well as other assigned readings before the respective class to be able to contribute to class discussions. Regular attendance and active participation in class are highly recommended. Also, you should actively follow news about recent developments in economics and finance.
