概要
In this course, we study Harmut Rosa’s theory of “Social Acceleration” and think about it's applicability and implications for modern society. One of his central theses is that while initially modern social acceleration had a liberating and empowering effect in late modernity it is in danger of becoming the very opposite, endangering the sustainability of societies. Rosa identifies three categories of change: technological acceleration, evident in transportation, communication, and production; the acceleration of social change, reflected in cultural knowledge, social institutions, and personal relationships; and acceleration in the pace of life, which happens despite the expectation that technological change should increase an individual's free time. Originally published in German in 2005, his book has received much scholarly attention, having been praised as the most important sociological theory of our time. We will read the English translation, as well as excerpts from “The Good Life Beyond Growth”, in which Rosa and other scholars develop ideas of how to overcome the acceleration spiral in search of a better life that goes beyond an ever-expanding circle of extraction, consumption, pollution, waste, conflict and psychological burnout. After familiarizing ourselves with Rosa's theory, we will actively discuss examples of social acceleration in various societal spheres and research emerging trends which counter this development. This will be done through student presentations, class discussions and group work. Which specific topical examples will be focused on will be decided based on student interest.
目標
While familiarizing ourselves with one of the most recent and highly discussed sociological theories of our time, we will discuss its applicability and look for concrete example for the described mechanisms, as well as emerging countertrends.
授業外の学習
There will be required readings every week, which you are expected to prepare based on discussion questions. In addition to this, you will give at least one class presentation on a topic of your choice (to be decided in class) and will write a final paper on this topic. Depending on the number of students, these requirements may be arranged somewhat at the start of the semester.
所要時間: At least 190 minutes per session.
