概要

The study of social movements has been one of the most rapidly growing fields in sociology. This seminar examines key articles in social movement research, including both classical and recent writings. We will read and critique the central issues in social movement studies, such as political opportunities, resource mobilization, framing, policy outcomes, cycles of protest, diffusion mechanisms, culture and identity, and international dimensions, and each student will write an empirical research paper. The course is organized around three primary goals: (1) to understand main theoretical and empirical approaches in social movement research; (2) to develop the ability to critically examine these approaches; and (3) to write an empirical research paper. Given the vast volume of social movement research and the diversity of analytical and theoretical approaches, it will not be possible to review all the relevant literature, but the course aims to cover most of the major lines of social movement research. The class is conducted in a seminar-style: students are expected to present the assigned readings and actively participate in discussions. Presentations and discussions are held in each class throughout the semester. ※The course is cross-listed with the Graduate School of Global Studies. Students majoring other disciplines are also cordially welcomed in this course.

目標

Upon completing this course, students will be able to: 1) Understand main theoretical and empirical approaches in social movement research. 2) Develop the ability to critically examine these approaches. 3) Write an empirical research paper. 4) Develop sociological perspectives and frameworks with which to analyze students’ own research projects.

授業外の学習

Before each class, students are expected to do the followings (190 mins in total): 1) Complete the assigned readings and be prepared to hand in their comments and questions before coming to class. 2) Think of questions, critically evaluate, and form opinions (agree/disagree) about the content of the course readings, and be ready to actively participate in class discussions. 3) Also, note that normally, it should take several weeks to complete a good quality final paper. Guidance is available from the instructor while you develop your paper for the course.
