概要
Comparative education applies the intellectual tools of history, philosophy and the social sciences to understanding educational issues. This English-medium course will explore comparative education theory and its application to educational research with an international and comparative dimension. While comparative methods are important, lacking a solid understanding of their theoretical and ideological foundations can lead to their misuse. This course aims to support students preparing for dissertation research, but also caters to students with a general interest in how to use comparative research critically. After giving a general introduction to comparative education, the course explores the epistemological foundations of the field. It then examines key literature that illustrate methods and approaches for studying different units of comparison in education. To facilitate learning, theoretical and practical sessions are organized in successive order from sessions 2 to 14 (e.g. theories learned in session 2 are applied to examples of comparative studies in session 3, etc.). Please note that contents of this syllabus may be subject to change.
目標
1) To acquire a sound grasp of the theoretical foundations of comparative education; 2) To learn diverse approaches to comparison in education; 3) To apply any of the comparative approaches learned in the course to preparing a literature review.

Students are expected to study the assigned readings to prepare for class discussions, and prepare individual presentations. (2-3 hours)
