概要

This English-medium seminar will focus on socio-political aspects of educational development, particularly in the context of low-income nations and transitional/post-conflict societies. Key issues include education policy, governance and administration, and schools' role in promoting social cohesion. We will look at "global education reform” phenomena, such as child-centered instruction, decentralization and Education for All (EFA), and critically analyze why policy-makers in developing nations adopt them. We will also examine the relationship between education, conflict and peace. Theories are drawn mostly from sociology and political science, but significant insights are gained from organizational studies and psychology as well. Finally, students will learn basics of program evaluation: how can the effectiveness of education intervention be assessed and measured? During the semester, we may have joint online seminars with overseas universities. The class schedule and topics are subject to change.

目標

Students are expected to become acquainted with theories and research approaches to understand how education, society and politics intersect in nations characterized by poverty, inequality, insecurity and cultural diversity. They will also gain a basic understanding of how the effectiveness of education interventions can be assessed.
