ACADEMIC WRITING I (PH.D.)

概要

The Academic Writing seminar has two parts: Academic Writing I and Academic Writing II. The first will be offered in the Spring Semester each year, and the second will be offered in the Autumn Semester each year. Academic Writing I provides the foundation for reviewing a range of research objectives and approaches, acquiring research and presentation skills, and will lead to a project/dissertation proposal. Academic Writing II will focus on conducting research and writing the master’s/doctoral thesis and an academic paper for conference presentation and/or for publication. This syllabus is for Academic Writing I. Students are expected to read assigned readings to prepare for class discussions, work on writing assignments and individual presentations, provide constructive feedback on each other's research, and work towards writing and/or refining their research proposal. Please note that contents of this syllabus may be subject to change.

目標

1. Learn to formulate research questions and elaborate a research plan. 2. Learn research methods and approaches in comparative education. 3. Acquire skills in academic research, writing and presentation.

授業外の学習

1. Study assigned readings before each class (3 hours) 2. Prepare 3 major writing assignments: (around 20 hrs) a) review of a thesis or a pair of research articles (1,500-2,000 words); b) Literature review on own research topic (2,000-2,500 words); c) Research proposal (2,000-2,500 words) and abstract (100-200 words) 3. Prepare individual presentations (1 hour)
