概要
This course approaches the cultures and societies of Asia through the scrutiny of various musics performed in contemporary Asia. We will primarily focus on contemporary phenomena, such as popular music, politicization of music, modernization of music, postcolonial engagement, diasporas' music, invention and dynamics of traditional music, among others. A film screening in the middle of the semester will supplement the readings.
目標
- To be able to understand contemporary Asia from socio-cultural perspectives and through music as a non-verbal and intangible art form. - To be able to research a socio-cultural phenomenon of Asia through music, broadly defined, and relevant art forms. - To be able to express one's research results through an individual oral presentation and a term paper (the length will be decided in class). - Practice reading secondary literature in English
授業外の学習
- Doing the readings before each class. - Term paper proposal writing and oral presentation thereof in the mid-semester. - Term paper writing and oral presentation towards the end of the semester.
