概要

Democratic institutions are generally expected to mitigate or resolve conflicts among people(s) through their functions to reflect peoples' opnions in policies. On the other hand, dmocratization processes have turned out to be not so peaceful since we witnessed many violent conflicts on the way to democracy especially in the aftermath of the Cold War. Still, in the pecebuilding efforts after the stop of violence, we are atttempting to build democratic institutions even in the place where violence erupted during the democratization. How should we think about the relations between the democracy and conflict? Theoretical and practical aspects will be covered in the class. And, technically, each class will be devided into 2 parts. First half of each class will be devoted to the lecture which introduce the topic of the day and explain mainly theoretical aspect of it. Then, in the latter half of the class, participants are expected to discuss the topic based on the knowledge from the reading assignments. Before attending the 'advanced studies' (Level 400 classes), students are expected to take Level 200 and 300 classes and acquire necessary knowledge.

目標

Participants to the class are expected to explore their knowledge about democracy, conflicts and their relations. Also, participants are expected to become able to apply their knowledge about those to the real cases of democratization or peacebuilding and analyze them.

授業外の学習

At least, participants will need to allocate 40 minutes to review contents of the week's class and 120 minutes to read through assigned books and theses related to the class topics of the next week and 60 minutes to summarize what one thinks and looks into.
