BASICS OF THEORIES OF CIVIL SOCIETY B

概要

In this course we will look mainly at the development of Japanese civil society as a case study to learn various approaches to civil society theory. While also touching on theoretical approaches with a global orientation, the main object of the course will be Japanese civil society, and in Japanese civil society especially social movements and movement organizations. We will learn basic theories of civil society and look at how they have been used to analyze the development of civil society in Japan. We will get an overview of the historical development of various parts of Japanese civil society. We will conduct discussions on every topic during the later part each session. Active participation in the discussions will make up 35 percent of the final grade. Depending on the session, we might also use texts or videos for analysis and discussion during class.

目標

The course aims at providing an overview of important theoretical concepts of civil society theory, especially social movement theory. In addition it gives insights into the historical development and comparative analysis of Japanese civil society. Students will be introduced to key questions in research of Japanese civil society.
