概要

In this course, students will practice area studies that "think global from local" through various aspects of Southeast Asian society and culture. The instructor specializes in cultural anthropology and conducts research on Islam and education in Southeast Asia, especially in Malaysia and Indonesia. Therefore, in this lecture, we will consider "area studies" mainly from the viewpoint of cultural anthropology. The concepts of "culture," "religion," "ethnicity," and "nation" discussed here are connected to various political, economic, and international relations issues. By learning about the "local" ways of life and society of the people of Southeast Asia, and by critically rethinking these concepts, students will acquire the ability to imagine "global" issues in new ways. This course is designed for practical learning. Therefore, students must actively participate in class and group discussions. In the first half of the course, students will engage in discussions with a variety of people without a fixed group, but in the second half of the course, they will be assigned to a fixed group by target area and work collaboratively toward a presentation. If you have any concerns about communication, etc., please consult with the instructor in advance so that we can make it easier for you to participate. This course is conducted in English as part of the SPSF degree program, but Japanese medium program students are also encouraged to participate. However, for those who are less confident in English or have little knowledge in Southeast Asia, it is highly recommended to take Basics of Southeast Asian Studies A in Japanese (Fall semester) first and then take this course in 2nd year spring semester. ※ information for students belong to Japanese medium courses 2020年度以降開講されている「東南アジア研究概説A」とBasics of Southeast Asian Studies Bは両⽅履修することができます。
