概要

This course is designed to develop students’ critical thinking and to introduce basic problems and issues underlying the various academic disciplines. It provides an introduction to the analysis of thought and value and is based on the idea that students can cultivate critical faculties by becoming more aware of the thinking process itself. Analytical skills will be developed through close engagement with a variety of texts, a process that involves careful reading, thoughtful writing, and probing discussion.

目標

By the end of the term, students will have acquired a deeper understanding of the processes by which people make judgments and decisions. They will be better at producing arguments, presenting evidence to support those arguments and better at determining and evaluating an author’s argument, evidence, presuppositions, biases, etc.

授業外の学習

●Preparation of class materials and reading assignments (60 minutes). ●Work on writing assignments (70 minutes) ●Review, ongoing assignments, preparation for final project (60 minutes) Students are expected to spend roughly 190 minutes per session engaged in learning activities. This includes reading assigned texts and/or listening to or viewing assigned materials, including online "lectures," videos and podcasts (roughly 60 minutes); completing writing assignments (roughly 70 minutes); doing research, working on ongoing assignments, or reviewing materials from previous classes (roughly 60 minutes). Students will be expected to complete the assigned readings and writing assignments prior to class. There will be a short paper of 2-4 pages for most of the assigned readings. The font size should be 12. There should be about 300 words a page. Include the word count at the end of your paper. All submitted papers should include: 1) your name, 2) student ID number, 3) date the assignment is due, and 4) numbered pages. Failure to follow this format will result in the papers being recorded as “late” and returned for correction and resubmission. All Thinking Processes students, regardless of their professor, can expect to write 10,000-12,000 words over the semester.

所要時間: 190 minutes per class.
