Roughly 6-8 pages in length. 3) Class participation, 25% of final grade. Students will be expected to ask questions and to participate actively in daily discussions. 4) Regular attendance. Late arrivals, if numerous, will be considered as an absence. Any student missing more than two classes (without explanation or receiving permission) will receive a lower final grade. Students who are absent more than six classes should expect to fail. See the syllabus (to be handed out on the first day of class) for more details about how the course will be evaluated. Your grade for the course will depend upon the quality and thoughtfulness of your writing, your contributions to class discussions, and your ability to work well with a group. Students are free to contact me through email, and I am always willing to make appointments for one-on-one meetings in person or on Zoom.
詳細情報
概要
This course functions as an introductory study of the rich and organic processes by which we think about the world around us. By becoming more aware of the thinking process itself, students will work towards developing a set of analytical and interpretive skills that will provide a foundation for later coursework and for life beyond university. To this end, students will spend their time both in and out of class engaging a wide variety of texts that complicate and challenge their views of culture, society, history and science. Close readings will be facilitated and encouraged through weekly writing assignments and nuanced discussion.
目標
The goals of this course are 1) to give students a firm grounding in critical thinking and academic analysis at the university level, 2) to improve students' ability to express such critical thinking in writing, and 3) to show how the ability to think critically is intimately connected to the ability to write well in an academic setting.
