More than one unexcused absence will result in your removal from the group project and a zero on all group assignments (meaning you will fail the course).

概要
This course is a practical introduction to qualitative research methods used by sociologists and other professionals. The focus will be on interviewing and analysis of interview data. Students will participate in group projects sharing data that they gather individually. Presentations and final assignments are group work. Anyone who does not participate fully will fail the course. Prerequisites: You must have completed at least one 200-level Anthropology-Sociology course prior to taking this course. If you do not meet the prerequisite, you should withdraw from the course. If you do not, you may fail the course.
目標
Students will learn how to conduct interviews, and how to process and code interview transcripts in order to produce a coded data set. They will learn how to present this work as findings and write this up in an final report. The goal is to produce professionals both competent in the executing the methods and able to explain and defend this choice of methodology to others.
授業外の学習
All students will engage in a group research project with other students, and produce a single data set and a final in-class presentation. Students will also write a final report based on the group data set. Each student will conduct four interviews (1 to 2 hours in length) and produce full verbatim transcripts that will be shared with all members of the group. Final presentations will all be done using MS Powerpoint, and posted to the class. Group research papers are due at the end of the class. ●Preparation of class materials and reading assignments (60 minutes). ●Conducting fieldwork and analysis of data (90 minutes) ●Preparing for tests and writing assignments (90 minutes)

All readings will be uploaded to moodle. Please begin reading before class begins. There will also be additional recommended readings posted regarding online interviewing and coding of transcripts. A detailed syllabus will be distributed in class and uploaded to moodle.
