概要

Sex, success, social duty, salvation, or service – what is the purpose of your life and why? How do we decide the priority in our life? How can we obtain what we most desire? Classical Indian culture has a long and rich tradition of examining various goals of life, and how to achieve them. If you look for sex, it teaches you how to capture and seduce the mind of your lover. For success, how to outwit and remove your rivals. For social duty, how to live with discipline and honor. For salvation, how to transcend the duality of happiness and suffering. And for service, how to fall passionately in love with God. In this course, by exploring Classical and Medieval texts from South Asia we learn to reflect critically on the values implicit in our life.

目標

Students will learn the depth, diversity, and complexity of the intellectual traditions of South Asia. They will become familiar with their historical context, canonical texts, and key concepts. By relativizing the norms and values of their life, students will be better equipped to deal with social and cultural diversity.
