概要
Stories of crime and detectives are durable and seem irresistible. While generally considered more popular than canonical, the detective story has deep roots, a long history, and contains many of the essentials of a compelling narrative and successful emplotment. At least Poe, Doyle, and Chandler in the reading list below are among the most well known names in world literature, others perhaps should be. Most of the authors below, however, have made their names and have helped place detection and crime fiction among the most gripping kinds of stories—a status which they hold to this very day—as can be seen by the multitude of television series that have moved the locus of crime solutions into the scientific lab or cognitive psychology: CSI, Bones, Criminal Minds, etc., etc. But first, the fictions of crime and detection conquered the “big screen” and many stories below have been widely disseminated through the cinema, and became cinema classics. Time permitting we will watch a few of these movies. The goals of this course are to 1) familiarize you with the development of detection and crime fiction in short stories and novels; we will pay particular attention to the development of the 2) detective archetype, elements of 3) narrative structure, 4) point of view, and 5) plot, particularly this context of solving a crime. Familiarity with these elements will get you to think and write about literature in a more sophisticated fashion, and to introduce you to broader developments in modern narrative.
