Course Requirements and Grading Policy: 1) Reading Responses, 40% of final grade. Students should be prepared to write reading responses on a regular basis basis, at least once a week. 2) Final, 30% of final grade. Depending on enrollment, this will be a longer essay of 8 pages or a written exam. 3) Class participation, 30% of final grade. Students will be expected to participate actively in daily discussions. 4) Regular attendance. Late arrivals will be considered the same as an absence. Any student missing more than two classes will receive a lower final grade. Students who are absent more than six classes will fail. Beyond class participation, your grade for the course will depend upon the quality and thoughtfulness of the writing you do. All writing of this kind will be submitted online at the Moodle site. Students are free to contact me through email, and I am always willing to make appointments for meetings outside of class.

概要

The literature of premodern Japan is remarkable for the depth and richness of its aesthetic sensibilities and for the range of voices and ideas it gives expression to. This course is intended as a general survey of the poetry, tales and performance genres that have exerted a lasting influence on the cultural history and literary legacy of pre-modern and modern Japan. We will spend our time reading the most interesting, the most respected, and the most provocative literature produced in Japan from the 8th century to the 19th century. This course is highly recommended (but not required) for students who wish to take higher level classes in pre-modern Japanese literature.

目標

The goals of the course are as follows: 1) To familiarize students with the core of Japan’s literary canon, beginning with the earliest collections of poetry from the 8th century and ending with the urban tales of the mid 18th century; 2) to introduce students to the issues and methodologies that have informed modern reception of pre-modern literature; 3) to acquaint students with some of the themes and ideals that have repeatedly found expression in Japanese culture; 4) to cultivate the student’s analytical and interpretive skills through in-depth class discussion and frequent writing assignments.

授業外の学習

Average required reading for each class: roughly 50 - 70 pages (150 minutes). Regular writing assignments - aside from the midterm and final papers, students will be required to submit regular reading responses (80 minutes).
