その他
1) Active, even passionate, participation in games we play in this class is extremely important: 60% 2) Formal essays and presentations: 40%. Periodically, students will be required to make formal speeches within the context of a game and to submit those speeches in written form. 3) Regular attendance is particularly important to this class. Late arrivals, if numerous, will be considered the same as an absence. Any student missing more than two classes (without explanation or receiving permission) will receive a lower final grade. Students who are absent more than four classes should expect to fail.
詳細情報
概要
This course is designed to give students an intensive introduction to the cultural and intellectual landscapes of certain moments in world history, with an emphasis on East Asia. Although the content changes from year to year, possible subject matter includes: Confucianism and Ming China, Samurai Culture in Tokugawa Japan, Dynastic Change in Choson Korea, The Fall of the Bakufu in 19th Century Japan, The French Revolution, Revolution in India, and others. This course will be run as a non-traditional course that makes use of the Reacting to the Past pedagogy. Although a few classes will be devoted to lectures and seminar-style group discussion, most classes will be devoted to interactive role-playing games that take the form of structured debates.
目標
First and foremost this course is designed to increase students' cultural literacy of seminal moments in cultural and intellectual history. A heavy emphasis will also be placed on close reading of important texts, writing persuasively, speaking eloquently, and strategic thinking.
授業外の学習
It is extremely important to be aware that this class requires a high level of effort from students. Given the nature of the role-playing games we will be playing in class, each student's commitment to the course will have a substantial impact on the quality of the experience that other students have. This is not a course that students can be passive listeners in; it demands active participation 100% of the time. As such, students should expect to work very hard (and enjoy themselves in the process). Expected work: Course Readings (120 minutes); Group Work (90 minutes); Writing Assignments (40 minutes)
所要時間: 250 minutes.
