概要

This course offers an introduction to the appreciation and the analysis of prose fiction and poetry in English. It provides students with basic tools for literary analysis to appreciate, discuss and write about literary texts. All readings are in English and most of literary examples are taken from British and American literature. Along with LIT 231, “Introduction to Japanese Literature,” this course is designed as a starting point for further literary studies at the Faculty of Liberal Arts at Sophia University.

目標

- To acquire fundamental skills for appreciating and analyzing literary texts - To learn how to do "close reading" of literary texts - To become familiar with some canonical texts in prose fiction and poetry in British and American literatures

Read assigned texts in light of issues discussed in the course. (120 min.) Work on assignments (40 min.) Review class discussion (30 min.)
