概要

[Note: If you do not meet the prerequisite but still want to enroll in this course, please email the instructor prior to the first class. In general, you are not allowed to enroll in the course, but the instructor may give you a special permission if your background is deemed sufficient. Not obtaining a permission is a sufficient reason for receiving an F grade.] Prerequisite: IBE333 (Development Economics) and IBE340 (Economic Statistics). We will explore some of the essential theoretical and empirical ideas related to poverty and economic issues in developing countries. In the first two weeks of the semester, we will review key statistical concepts that we will use throughout the semester. Then, we will study several topics related to the economics of poverty and human development: nutrition, healthcare, education, land, credit and risk, and institutions. For each topic, we will analyze what determines the decisions of poor households, what policies have been implemented, and whether the policies have been successful or not. This course is directed at students who are motivated by the struggle of a better world.

目標

At the completion of this course, students will be able to: 1) Discuss and critically think about different thoughts on poverty and development. 2) Analyze and describe the features of antipoverty policies. 3) Describe the key challenges related to poverty in developing countries. 4) Apply the theoretical knowledge acquired in Development Economics in practical and empirical cases.
