概要
The objective of this seminar is to raise the awareness of cultural concepts throughout history by offering a broad overview of the various elements related to graves and funerary rites in Japan combing historical, cultural, religious, and contemporary perspectives. For this purpose, we will examine concepts of the afterlife and the rites regarding funerals, burials, gravesites, and memorials as practiced in society approximately from the fifth through the nineteenth century with excursions to modern and contemporary Japan.
