概要

2018 marked the 150th anniversary of the Meiji Ishin, which is considered as the starting point of modern Japan. Historiography tends to build on origin narratives. In other words, our understanding of modern Japan up to the present is dictated by how we see its beginning. In particular, we have rarely questioned one aspect of the birth of modern Japan: the “Opening of the Nation” to the West, or kaikoku, and the resulting initiation of civilisation and progress. Based on the latest research on the topic, this course delves into the question of whether there are other ways of looking at Japan's Opening to the wider world. If so, what are the alternative narratives of modern Japanese history that they would open up?

目標

- Introduce understandings of transnational history and intellectual history as they relate to modern Japan - Understand problems, methods, and paradigms in the historiography of modern Japan - Develop skills of analysis and interpretation of historical texts and contexts - Acquire foundational knowledge and skills to open up new directions in modern Japanese history writing
