概要

This course offers students a survey in global history with an emphasis on important topics such as commerce, disease, climate, nationalism, colonialism, and imperialism. Students will familiarize themselves and practice an array of historiographical methods through the study of both primary and secondary sources. Through these readings, the students will gain insights into the lives and historical experiences of actors of all societal strata: merchants, sovereigns, explorers, slaves, conquerors, and diplomats on the global stage. By the end of the course, students will be able to formulate complex ideas about how different people from different societies were intimately linked and affected by the larger themes explored in each lesson. This way, students will also be able to see the entanglements of the topics set throughout the course. In addition to the course’s learning material and Moodle readings, individual research is strongly encouraged. Do not hesitate to contact me if you have any inquiries related to the structure and contents of the course or need advice on readings or how to find other sources.
