OTHER ASSESSMENTS 42% -Reflective journal entries (4x3%)12% -MDF (3x3%) 9% -Homework & Participation 21% ATTENDANCE AND CLASS PARTICIPATION POLICY The Core Program is based on a process-oriented educational philosophy. This means that student learning is about more than just completing assignments. A primary function of the Core Program is to engage students with the process of learning. This includes actively and meaningfully engaging with course materials, classmates, professors, and external resources such as the library or FLA Writing Center. Doing so in a slow and moderated fashion allows students to understand the learning process and to refine their learning. This approach is designed to provide a foundation for your later studies and beyond. Moreover, students who miss class find themselves perpetually behind and unable to do their best work. Accordingly, attendance is of extreme importance. Please keep the following matters in mind: - Students are required to attend and actively participate in all classes. - Students may miss two classes for any reason (medical, personal, train delay, or other). If you must miss a class because of illness, or for some other good reason (e.g., attending a funeral), inform me by e-mail in advance of your absence. Instructor email: [email protected] - Three absences: 10% reduction in final grade. - Four absences: automatic “F” for final grade. - Failing to participate (including, among other activities, incomplete homework, lack of class contributions, engaging your mobile phone) will result in a reduction in your final grade. - If you miss a class, you are responsible for finding out what you missed and how you can prepare for the next class. * I reserve the right to modify this syllabus. Any changes will be announced in class.

概要

This public speaking course is the final course in the compulsory Core Program curriculum. It is designed to build on the skills you have learned in your English Composition and Thinking Processes courses. Through a culmination of the Core Program skills, you will be required to master and deliver well-constructed, well supported, and well-thought-out descriptions, explanations, and arguments to an audience of peers.

目標

The study and application of public speaking is a two-way communication process. In this course you will prepare a series of expository speeches in outline form and deliver them extemporaneously. While the speaker prepares the message in the form of an outline, the exact wording is not determined until the time of delivery. Prepared—but not memorized—speeches allow for greater spontaneity and audience adaptation. Although the course has speaking in the title, speech making is only one element. More often than not, you will be in the audience, listening to speeches. Consequently, learning to better understand and evaluate the messages you hear is a major course goal. The competencies needed for these two roles—speaker and listener—are the focus of the course.
