INTERMEDIATE CHINESE 1*

概要

This is the third level of Chinese Learning. This course focuses on the learning of intermediate level vocabulary, grammar, sentence structures, functions (such as comparing something or talking about hobbies), and on abilities to use language structures for daily life communication, also reviewing the knowledge and skills learned in Basic Chinese 1 and 2. The texts in the textbook use dialogue forms, similar to the previous levels, in order to constantly strengthen students’ speaking and listening competences. At this level, the contents of reading texts are expanded so as to develop the students’ reading comprehension. Moreover, we will use practice exercises to continuously improve students’ four basic skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) in Chinese. Furthermore, customs and cultures that are associated with expressions and comprehension of Chinese will be introduced through the lessons. Students will be required to work in pairs and small groups most of the time, so active participation is required for the success of the class.

目標

The main functions and grammatical contents at the third level are:  Commenting on one’s actions or behaviors by using the complement "得"  How to change money at a bank and take a bus to your destination  Describing something that has happened with the particle "了"  How to borrow and return books at a library  Making comparisons though the preposition "比"and expressing specific differences between two things or persons  How to buy clothes at a shop or send a package at a post office  Expressing a duration of time with the particle"了"  Talking about your hobbies  Exchanging the new year’s wishes

授業外の学習

Students need to spend the time for self-study (preview and review.) Please have a look at the new vocabularies prior to class, in particular its meaning and pronounciation. Review the text, vocabulary, and exercises for each lesson using the audio data from the textbook. There is a Language Learning Commons(LLC) on the 1st floor of building 6. There are many books about learning Chinese, workbooks on Chinese proficiency tests, and Chinese movies. Please feel free to visit if you are interested in improving your Chinese.
