BASIC CHINESE 1*

概要

This course is an introduction to Chinese pronunciation, basic grammar, vocabulary usage and writing for students with little or no background in Chinese. It is designed to help students acquire the rudimentary knowledge of Chinese and develop basic skills in listening, reading, speaking and writing in the language. In particular, accuracy of pronunciation will be emphasized throughout the course by focusing on grasping the phonetic sound and tone of all the words and expressions learned. Students will be required to work in pairs and small groups most of the time, so active participation is required for the success of the class.

目標

At the end of the semester, students are generally expected to have achieved the following abilities: a) Listening and speaking: Ability to distinguish by ear and to pronounce Pinyin, as well as ability to write in Pinyin. Ability to initiate a dialogue and converse with a Mandarin speaker on simple topics of daily life as the following.  Daily greetings  Asking and talking about someone’s name, nationality and occupation  Introducing people and oneself  Looking for someone and asking for directions  Making comment and suggestions  Making apology and refusing politely  Asking and talking about one’s family, school, occupation b) Reading and writing: Ability to read simple texts written in Chinese characters (approximately 200, in simplified forms). Ability to write from memory approximately 180 Chinese characters.

授業外の学習

Students need to spend the time for self-study (preview and review). Please have a look at the new vocabularies prior to class, in particular its meaning and pronounciation. There is a Language Learning Commons(LLC) on the 1st floor of building 6. There are many books about learning Chinese, workbooks on Chinese proficiency tests, and Chinese movies. Please feel free to visit if you are interested in improving your Chinese.
