概要

**STUDENTS WHO TOOK THIS COURSE/ART482 IN THE PAST MAY REPEAT THIS COURSE. The content for this semester is completely new.** - This course will be taught in person unless otherwise notified by the professor or by the university. - Please make sure to enroll in the course Moodle by the first day of class. Enrollment key is 482: https://moodle.cc.sophia.ac.jp/course/view.php?id=36101 This seminar considers the history of “Nihonga,” literally meaning “Japanese painting,” but in practice referencing certain types of painting produced in modern Japan since the Meiji period. It was in contrast to “Western painting” (seiyōga or yōga) that painting practices that Nihonga came to be defined as a “national” style of painting unique to Japan. We will survey the history of Nihonga from the late 19th century to the present, and consider its production and reception in relation to broader issues that have defined modernity, including nationalism, imperialism, colonialism, artistic modernism, and avant-gardism. We will also study the reception of Nihonga in the West, as well as the problematization of Nihonga in relation to contemporary art practices in recent decades. We will collectively investigate the central question: what does it mean for painting to be “Japanese”? Students are strongly advised to have taken one of my 300-level courses (the Modern Japanese Art course or the Japonisme course) or other 300-level courses in either Japanese or modern art history prior to taking this course. Students who took my ART482 in the past are encouraged to repeat this course (on a different topic). Students should have completed the Core requirement for graduation prior to registering in this course; the course is intended for advanced undergraduate students typically in their fifth semester and beyond. The ability to read Japanese and some familiarity with modern Japanese history also will be highly advantageous in this course.

目標

If successfully completed, students will have learned by the end of the semester the history, practice, reception, and critical theories surrounding the idea of "Japanese painting" (Nihonga) in Japan since the late nineteenth century to the present.

授業外の学習

Students are expected to spend on average about 190 minutes of learning per each lesson. This learning includes reading assigned texts (110 mins) and completing assignments (big and small; 80 min.).

所要時間: 190 minutes
