SEMINAR IN FILM AND MEDIA STUDIES*

概要

This seminar focuses on films that take nuclear events as their subject matter. We will discuss how nuclear threats and disasters have been envisioned in cinema and how these cultural productions reflect and engage social and political concerns around nuclear technologies. We will watch a variety of types of nuclear films, from monster movies and science fiction to satire, drama, documentary, and experimental film. In discussions of films across genres, historical periods, and cultural traditions, we will consider how audiovisual media shape our understandings of and responses to nuclear concerns—from weapons and war to energy and waste—and how these nuclear films engage broader theoretical questions around disaster, contamination, gender, class, invisibility, and visuality.

•Demonstrate familiarity with film terminology •Think critically about the limits and possibilities of film genre categories in presenting information and conveying feelings about nuclear issues •Connect aesthetics and politics as well as form and content when analyzing films •Interpret films from multiple historical, critical, and theoretical perspectives •Synthesize course material and discussions with outside research
