There will be about three to four closed book quizzes, which will be something like short versions of mid-term examinations. Detailed distribution of the evaluation will be confirmed on the first day of class.

概要
This course will examine American art and visual culture from the colonial period to World War II. With a focus on painting and sculpture, various forms of artistic visual expression including engraving, illustration, photography and decorative arts will be discussed. While surveying the history of American art, the lectures will also address topics such as art and nationalism, art and war, representation of race and ethnicity, gender and sexuality, as well as influences from other cultures in American art.
目標
Students will: 1) gain a basic understanding of American art history. 2) learn to analyze art works critically and to verbally describe them. 3) study art works and visual representations in its social, historical, political and religious context. The visual analysis skills acquired through the course should enable each student to study images critically.
授業外の学習
Students are required to do the following works for each class. Preparation: 1) Read the reading assignments and take notes. All assigned readings are required. (100 minutes) 2) Work on assignments (30 minutes). Review: 1) Go over the materials covered in class and clarify the important issues. Memorize artist's names, important facts surrounding the artists / art works introduced in class. (30 minutes). 2) Work on assignments (30 minutes).
