STUDIES IN FILM AND MEDIA STUDIES*

概要

This film studies course will explore how our visions of the environment have shaped and been shaped by cinema from a variety of cultural traditions. In addition to eco-documentaries, we will watch films from around the world that may be considered under the broader rubric of ecocinema including works of science fiction, animation, and eco-activism. We will consider formal and narrative strategies used in films to represent and complicate our understandings of and relationships to the environment and think about how film as an artistic medium communicates in different ways than other media. We will also examine filmmaking as a material practice that tends to be highly resource-intensive. We will discuss familiar concepts such as nature, culture, wilderness, and the environment and reflect on how they are used in cinema and how they have been understood in different cultural and historical contexts.
