概要

How do we relate to and make sense of what we see on the screen? This course will introduce cinematic language and techniques as well as some of the social, cultural, and technological developments that have made cinema one of the most influential art forms over the past century. We will focus on different formal techniques that create meaning in films as well as various approaches to understanding and contextualizing them. The films to be examined span genres, periods, and cultural traditions. Through readings, screenings, lectures, creative activities, and discussion, students will become familiar with terminology and interpretive approaches used in film and media studies.

目標

By the end of this course, students should be able to: •Actively engage with film and media by watching, reading, and thinking critically •Demonstrate familiarity with terminology used in film and media studies •Understand major historical, technological, and theoretical developments in film and media •Describe and analyze aesthetic choices involved in filmmaking •Interpret a film with reference to its historical, social, and cultural contexts •Understand the role of cinema in society
