概要

This course introduces the history of Western art from ancient times to the present, with a focus on developments from the Renaissance (1400s) to the early 20th century. Students will be exposed to a multitude of media including paintings, prints, architecture, sculptures, decorative arts, and the more modern formats such as installations. Special attention will be paid to the cultural, social, political, and religious context in which works were produced and functioned. The more general aim of this course is to help you develop skills in visual literacy, which can be defined as the ability to describe, analyze, evaluate, discuss and write coherently about visual form. Previous knowledge of art history or European and American cultural history is not required for the course.

目標

The course will challenge you to: - Experience and respond to a work of art - Interpret a work of art in its social, historical, and cultural context - Describe and evaluate visual form using appropriate terminology - Look, read, and think critically - Formulate conclusions based upon visual and other types of evidence - Accept criticism productively and ask questions of yourself and your work - Relate to visual forms that are historically and culturally distant from us, and which may be divergent from our contemporary aesthetic norms.

Students are expected to spend on average about 190 minutes of learning per each lesson; this includes reading assigned texts (100 min.), learning from the course materials on Moodle (60 min.), and completing assignments and quizzes (30 min.).

所要時間: 190 min.
